How to make an Austrian Blind - Part Two

STAGE TWO

With the sides and bottom of your blind finished, now attach the 2 ½ " (64mm) pencil pleat touch and close heading tape to the very top of the blind.

(Take care not to trap any of the heading tape pull-up cords under the stitching).

Now lay the blind face down and sew on the clear rings.  These should be attached in rows approximately 24" (60cm) apart (i.e. 1 ½" (3.5cm) in from the edges of the blind - the middle of each width - and on any seam).

Start at the bottom and attach the quick release ring 3" (7.5cm) above the bottom frill or plain hem and 1 1/2" (3.8cm) in from the side frills or side hems.  At 8" (20cm) above each of the quick release rings sew on a plain clear ring, then work up the blind adding clear rings at 8" (20cm) intervals.

Work to within 8" (20cm) of the top of the blind.

The rows of rings must be evenly spaced and level and it may help to mark the ring positions with pins.  When the fabric is gathered up by the heading tape the rows will be approximately 12" (30cm) apart.  The quick release ring in each row needs to be sewn on securely with extra care: they carry all the strain.  The other small clear rings simply guide the cords and help it to form the ruching, and they can be attached mainly to the lining with one or two stitches catching the main fabric.  With matching threads and near invisible rings your fabric and lining will appear not to have stitches at all.
